Quantum Chip

IBM announced that its newly developed experimental quantum‑chip, named “Loon”, offers a clear path toward building useful quantum computers by 2029—a significant milestone for quantum computing research.

The company revealed the chip on November 12, 2025, noting that Loon demonstrates key advances in quantum error‑correction and qubit interconnects, major hurdles that have long kept quantum machines from achieving practical use. Reuters reports that IBM’s senior researcher Jay Gambetta said the firm is confident of reaching “quantum advantage”where a quantum computer out‑performs a classical one on real‑world tasks—within that timeframe.

Quantum computers promise to solve problems that would take classical computers thousands of years, but have been hampered by error rates and scalability issues. IBM’s Loon chip integrates not only qubits but also new quantum‑connections between them—an innovation researchers at analyst firm Gartner described as “very, very clever.”

IBM also introduced another chip, “Nighthawk”, which is slated for release later this year. The company plans to let outside researchers test Nighthawk in collaboration with startups and the open‑source community. This move reflects IBM’s intention to build not just hardware, but an ecosystem around quantum computing.

While Loon remains experimental and not yet available for public testing, IBM’s announcement signals growing confidence in practical quantum computing within the next few years. If successful, IBM’s work with Loon and Nighthawk could reshape industries from cryptography and materials science to optimization and drug discovery.
